TV watching at school

Posted 06-25-2008 at 11:36 AM by TeachinLittleOnes
I was shocked to find (although the last week of school) that my husband's school allows the students to watch TV when their is down time. He walked into a classroom and the students were signing yearbooks, talking and watching Disney Kids. The students were in 6th grade.
I do not feel school should be promoting this time of "downtime" activities. There should have been a group activity or discussion going on. Especially since the majority of the students will be leaving the elementary school to go to the middle school I felt the teacher should have been paying more attention to them. Being a male, my husband said it was only for ten minute filler and it was not a bad show but still I wanted to get other people's opinions about this topic!
Should parents have to worry about a 1st grader watching something at school that they have been told at home they cannot watch? Is TV watching an okay activity for school? Let me know your thoughts!

I think this is crazy!!!! I don't send my kids to school to be plopped down in front of the tv. It's bad enough how much tv they get away with watching at home, and one of the reasons I let them watch at home is because I know they haven't been watching all day!
TV is barely an ok activity when at home, let alone when at school!

When I was looking at preschools for my daughter, I was shocked to find one that had the kids watching cartoons! That school came off my list immediately.
That being said, I have allowed my students to watch a program during the last week of school, but it was always related to curriculum. I don't think TV is evil, but there has to be a reason for watching it. There are many wonderful educational programs out there...especially if the school subscribes to United Streaming and has access to curriculum related programs.

I agree.. I think if you monitor what your children/students watch on TV to be sure it is age appropriate, contains material that does not contradict your morals/standards and if in the classroom setting pertains to subject matter-it is fine to watch TV. I was saddened to see teachers allowing upper elementary students to watch TV during school hours.
